Diversity

The American Lung Association values cultural diversity. Diversity is essential to achieving our mission. There shall be full participation in the nationwide organization by all people, regardless of race, gender, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin and disability. Because of the disproportionate impact of lung disease on communities of color and underserved communities, the ALA embraces diversity on both moral grounds and as a mission-driven imperative. In addition to other established policies addressing diversity and inclusion, the ALA is committed to diversity on all levels and in all programs.

  1. At the local and national levels, the ethnic and cultural mix of ALA staff, boards and volunteers shall approximate the demographics of the community.
  2. Programs and activities of ALA shall be appropriate and culturally sensitive to diverse audiences.
  3. Researchers from culturally diverse populations are encouraged to carry out research programs supported by the American Lung Association, locally and nationally.
  4. Research specific to the needs of culturally diverse populations is encouraged for inclusion in the research programs of the American Lung Association.
  5. Vendors from culturally diverse communities are identified and considered in all local and national ALA purchasing opportunities, including, but not limited to, bid solicitations.
