Corporate Cup and Asthma Walk
Special events, including one of the largest corporate road races in the nation, raise vital funds for programs to fight the third leading cause of death.
September 19, 2010, 8:15 a.m.
Start line is at 19th and Chicago near the Omaha Civic Auditorium
$25 participant fee before September 4th, $35 between September 4th and September 19th
The Corporate Cup is one of the premier running events in the nation (recently ranked 10th best 10-K in the U.S. by America’s Best) and among the largest of corporate road races in the United States. From the first Corporate Cup in 1981, the event has experienced phenomenal success. In that first year, 29 companies entered and 681 runners crossed the finish line. In 2009, 233 companies entered with more than 10,000 registrants.
The Corporate Cup’s unique character—businesses and their employees coming together to have fun and fight lung disease—is the basis for its success. Participants may choose to WALK or RUN a 2-mile USATF certified course or a 10K USATF certified competitive course. There is also a kids 100 yard dash that will begin on Chicago St. north of the Civic Auditorium at approximately 10:00 a.m.
We have made the 2010 Corporate Cup easier than ever to register for and participate in. This year all participants will be “chip-timed.” Chip timing systems require that athletes wear a small, lightweight chip that uniquely identifies them as they cross strategically placed, electronic mats. The chips this year will be integrated into the runner’s bib number. In its most basic and common form, chip timing electronically handles the task of collecting and processing results at the end of the race.

These events have recently taken place, but you can still donate to the American Lung Association! Each event was a great success. Thank you to everyone who participated, volunteered or donated. You have helped further the mission of the American Lung Association: to prevent lung disease and promote lung health.
Contest runs January 18 through March 26, 2010.
The American Lung Association has partnered with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma, Oklahoma Department of Education, and Oklahoma State Department of Health to develop, promote and implement the contest throughout the state. This contest gives elementary school students the opportunity to create an idea for a commercial showing why people should never use tobacco. Two grand prize winners will have their storyboards animated into commercials and distributed to television stations, posted on multiple Web sites and promoted across the state. The teachers of winning students also will receive gift certificates for classroom supplies.

A Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease stakeholders group guides our activities. Community spirometry screenings are held to tackle undiagnosed emphysema and chronic bronchitis. A continuing education program for health care providers drew nearly 500 participants in 2007-2008.
The Lung Association leads the Omaha Asthma Alliance coalition, which was responsible for conducting Open Airways program for school children, Asthma 101 for community advocates, Breathe Well, Live Well asthma management for adults and continuing education for health care providers.
Smokefree Omaha is a grassroots movement to bring smokefree air to Omaha citizens, which spread to Lincoln and the entire state. Comprehensive smokefree worksite laws now cover the entire state.
For the 32nd year, children with asthma attended Camp Superkids® where, under medical supervision, they learned to manage their disease. The knowledge that kids learn at camp helps them to stay in school and on the playground instead of in the hospital or doctor’s office.
