Be Smart, Don’t Start

The Be Smart, Don’t Start Story Board contest is a drawing and writing contest where students can create an idea showing why people should never use tobacco. The contest will run from January 5th-February 27th 2009 and is open to public, private and home-schooled children in kindergarten through fifth grade. The two grand-prize winners will have their stories turned into 30-second public service announcements that will be broadcast on television.

Beaujolais Nouveau

November 22, 2008
Southern Hills Country Club
2636 East 61st Street
Tulsa, OK 74136

At midnight, on the third Thursday in November, the release of the wine is signaled with a gunshot and the ringing of church bells as the wine begins its journey to Paris and from there around the world. The American Lung Association of Oklahoma celebrates the arrival in Tulsa with the Beaujolais Nouveau gala on November 22, 2008, at the picturesque Southern Hills Country Club. Guests will enjoy a gourmet dinner and some of the most exuberant wines from around the globe. All proceeds will benefit the many programs offered by the American Lung Association, promoting awareness, advocacy, education and research of lung-related diseases for the people of Oklahoma.

Our Work In Tulsa

Be Smart, Don’t Start

This school-based program is a unique opportunity for youth to create and illustrate tobacco prevention messages. Winning ideas are used to create a 30-second television public service announcement (PSA) to teach others about the dangers of tobacco use. Over 2200 elementary students (K-5) have been reached with this tobacco prevention program.

Breathe Smart, From the Start – Last year, we trained 27 facilitators to assist us in encouraging pregnant women to adopt tobacco-free environments for their families.

Counting on You…Responding to Kids with Asthma

This program is a fun and interactive designed for childcare providers and others that care for children with asthma. This program provides a general asthma overview, information on asthma medications and treatments and environmental asthma triggers. Last year, 72 childcare facilities participated in the program, and are actively engaged in creating an “asthma friendly” environment for the children they serve.

Freedom from Smoking (FFS)

This nationally recognized research-based program is highly successful in helping adults quit tobacco-for good. Over 40 tobacco cessation clinics were conducted by volunteer facilitators last year.

Oklahoma Asthma Initiative

The Oklahoma Asthma Initiative works in four main areas to impact asthma: reduced number of asthma related deaths; hospitalization and emergency room visits; school/work days missed and limitations on activity due to asthma.

Open Airways for Schools (OAS)

OAS is an asthma education curriculum designed for youth aged 8-11 with a diagnosis of asthma; this research based “best practice” program is highly interactive to teach children how to manage and control their disease. Over 30 schools will offer an OAS program this year to help their students learn to manage their asthma.
