Contest runs January 18 through March 26, 2010.
The American Lung Association has partnered with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma, Oklahoma Department of Education, and Oklahoma State Department of Health to develop, promote and implement the contest throughout the state. This contest gives elementary school students the opportunity to create an idea for a commercial showing why people should never use tobacco. Two grand prize winners will have their storyboards animated into commercials and distributed to television stations, posted on multiple Web sites and promoted across the state. The teachers of winning students also will receive gift certificates for classroom supplies.

Be Smart, Don’t Start
This school-based program is a unique opportunity for youth to create and illustrate tobacco prevention messages. Winning ideas are used to create a 30-second television public service announcement (PSA) to teach others about the dangers of tobacco use. Over 2200 elementary students (K-5) have been reached with this tobacco prevention program.
Breathe Smart, From the Start – Last year, we trained 27 facilitators to assist us in encouraging pregnant women to adopt tobacco-free environments for their families.
Counting on You…Responding to Kids with Asthma
This program is a fun and interactive designed for childcare providers and others that care for children with asthma. This program provides a general asthma overview, information on asthma medications and treatments and environmental asthma triggers. Last year, 72 childcare facilities participated in the program, and are actively engaged in creating an “asthma friendly” environment for the children they serve.
Freedom from Smoking (FFS)
This nationally recognized research-based program is highly successful in helping adults quit tobacco-for good. Over 40 tobacco cessation clinics were conducted by volunteer facilitators last year.
Oklahoma Asthma Initiative
The Oklahoma Asthma Initiative works in four main areas to impact asthma: reduced number of asthma related deaths; hospitalization and emergency room visits; school/work days missed and limitations on activity due to asthma.
Open Airways for Schools (OAS)
OAS is an asthma education curriculum designed for youth aged 8-11 with a diagnosis of asthma; this research based “best practice” program is highly interactive to teach children how to manage and control their disease. Over 30 schools will offer an OAS program this year to help their students learn to manage their asthma.
