Freedom From Smoking (FFS) is a community based smoking cessation program that offers a supportive environment in which individuals can quit smoking. The program has more than 20 years of success nationally. The program has an orientation and seven sessions that extend over a seven-week period, with each session lasting two hours. The psychological principles and methods used help the individual gain control over his/her behavior, which makes quitting a less stressful experience.
This behavior modification program helps people:
• Learn about their addiction
• Builds motivation to quit.
• Provides the support needed to quit.
Included in the program is counseling on diet, exercise, stress management, and relaxation techniques.
To register, contact Kylie Brinkman at or 316-558-3090.

Open Airways for Schools (OAS)
OAS is a school based asthma education curriculum designed for youth aged 8-11 with a diagnosis of asthma. This research based “best practice” program is highly interactive to teach children how to manage and control their disease. Last year, 92 students in Sedgwick County learned how to better manage and control their asthma by participating in this program.
Living with Asthma
This is a two hour evening learning opportunity that allows patients and caregivers an in-depth review of asthma management. Programs for children and adults are offered concurrently. The children’s program utilizes interactive games to teach core health messages. Last year we offered five programs, reaching 30 adults and 20 children.
This is an asthma education research project for those with uncontrolled asthma. This project is designed to show that asthma education will reduce the costs of medical care for patients with asthma, especially those that are not well managed. We utilize the Open Airways for Schools program to teach asthma management skills throughout the community, in order to reduce asthma related hospitalizations and emergency room visits.
Local Tobacco Efforts
We partner with local tobacco coalitions and networks to address pertinent tobacco issues impacting the community. Activities include encouraging the adoption of tobacco-free ordinances.
Health Care Strategic Alliance for Visioneering Wichita
Through our partnership with Visioneering Wichita, we are working to improve the quality of life for all of south-central Kansas through our work in preventing lung disease and promoting lung health.
