Taking and Leaving
By Emily Bissell, the founding leader of the Organization that is the American Lung Association

In the late 1800’s, tuberculosis (TB) was the most feared disease in the world. Emily Bissell established a creative way, to raise money to “Stamp Out Tuberculosis” that still supports the American Lung Association today, Christmas Seals. Thanks to the generosity of friends like you, a cure for TB was found. This groundwork led the American Lung Association to expand its efforts fight all lung diseases. Our mission is to prevent lung disease and promote lung health, and it remains as strong today as it did generations ago when Emily Bissell initiated her campaign.

The Emily Bissell Heritage Society is a recognition society for supporters who are committed to keeping our vision alive by including the American Lung Association in their estate plans. Some ways to include us are:

  • Remembering the ALA in their will
  • Establishing a Charitable Gift Annuity, so ALA receives fixed guaranteed payments
  • Developing a charitable trust
  • Creating retirement plans with ALA as a beneficiary
  • Naming ALA a beneficiary on life insurance policies
  • Donating stock or real estate

Many of these support methods can also offer favorable tax benefits for donors.

If you have an interest in learning more about the Emily Bissell Heritage Society and how you can iclude the ALA in your estate plans, please contact your local ALA office.

Thanks for your support and remembering the words of Emily Bissell,

“Though we take things as we find them,
we can always leave them better.”
