Special Events
The American Lung Association of the Central States is an organization motivated by the vision of a world free from lung disease. Our mission to prevent lung disease and promote lung health is the driving force behind all of the special events we hold within the communities around our region.
The purpose of the special events within the central states region is two-fold. First, our events are a celebration of our successes in the fight against lung disease and the promotion of lung health. Secondly, our events provide the perfect venue for concerned and caring people within our communities to join together and make a difference in our world.
The American Lung Association of the Central States provides events appealing to a full range of interests and physical abilities. Asthma Walk
The American Lung Association can give you 22 million reasons why we need to “Blow the Whistle on Asthma” and why you should help fight the asthma epidemic and make an impact. More than 22 million Americans currently have asthma. You probably know someone who suffers from this chronic disease. It could be a family member, a young child, a co-worker, a neighbor or maybe even you. Asthma Walk gives you the chance to get involved and help your loved ones breathe easier.
Asthma Walk is a nation wide effort bringing attention to this devastating chronic illness. We know a lot about asthma, but there is so much we don’t know. Your participation will raise the funds necessary to provide life saving education, research and advocacy so we can better control asthma and soon find a cure.
The Asthma Walk is the American Lung Association’s signature special event. People across the country walk to raise awareness and money for asthma research and education. This event is a great way to get your family, business and neighbors involved with the American Lung Association.
Clean Air Challenge
The American Lung Association of the Central States introduces an exciting new way for individuals, businesses and communities to partner with the Lung Association to help make our air even cleaner.
We are excited to work with individuals and companies who are interested in protecting their health, promoting clean air and making a difference.
The Clean Air Challenge combines the excitement and energy of a five-kilometer road race with the traditional stand-up and make a difference approach of our Asthma Walk. The dynamic combination of the two events provides a unique opportunity to bring together those who are touched by the devastating impact of Asthma with those who wish to make a meaningful impact on the quality of the air we all breathe.
The joint spirit of those involved in our Clean Air Challenge events will forward the efforts of the American Lung Association of the Central States to a new level.
Clean air for all of us to breathe is within our reach, and the horrible impact that toxic air is within our ability to control. Join us at our next Clean Air Challenge and start to make a difference.
Corporate Cup
The American Lung Association of the Central States holds its premier event of the year in Omaha, Nebraska. The Corporate Cup is a 28-year-old event that draws runners from around the entire region.
Traditionally drawing thousands of individuals representing hundreds of companies, the Corporate Cup is one of the largest athletic events in the state of Nebraska. It is organized as a team event, and for many Nebraska companies, it has become an annual tradition for excellent team building and wellness. We invite you to become a Team Captain and get your company involved.
Team participants may choose to walk or run the two-mile non-competitive course or the ten-kilometer (6.2 miles) TAC-certified competitive course.
The first American Lung Association Omaha Corporate Cup was held in 1981. It was envisioned as a unique running/walking event with a focus on company teams with proceeds used to fight lung disease in this state. For participants, the Omaha Corporate Cup was seen as a celebration of wellness and promotion of respiratory health.
The first race attracted 29 teams and 681 individuals who raised $4,364. A quarter century later, the average turnout of 300 teams and 10,000 individuals raise nearly $230,000. To date, the event has raised more than $2 million for lung association programs and has grown into the single largest participatory athletic event in the state.
The vast majority, about 97 percent of participants are companies, employees and their families. Companies of all sizes have been represented at the Omaha Corporate Cup including Union Pacific Railroad, Mutual of Omaha, Gallup, First Data and Nebraska Furniture Mart.
Stair Climb
Stair climbs are unique fundraising events for the American Lung Association. They usually happen in prominent skyscrapers and involve climbing the stairs to the top floor.
Sometimes called a “vertical road race”, participants can use the event as a fitness target or as a race to challenge yourself while being active and meeting new friends. American Lung Association Stair Climbs are also a wonderful way to support someone who has lung disease or as a memorial to someone who has passed away.
This is more than your average 5k. This event takes people vertical as they attempt to climb many floors to reach the celebration at the top. Whether climbing for a winning time or simply to cross the finish line, this event is a great way to challenge yourself physically. We guarantee that all finishers will have a new found respect for their lungs.
Corporations can make a Stair Climb a fantastic employee team-building event. Putting together a corporate team is a great way to build employee morale and to encourage healthy lifestyles. Corporate teams bond over the physical experience, but more importantly they work together to raise money for this important cause.
Bike rides
Bike rides are an exciting and easy way for families, corporations and teams to get involved in the fight against lung disease. Bike rides can be both enjoyable and competitive. Rides can include participants from all age groups and they pedal us all a little closer to a world free from lung disease.
Galas
Galas bring an air of sophistication to the American Lung Association of the Central States’ events. Many of our Galas include live entertainment, wine tasting and auctions – both live and silent.
Galas provide an opportunity for us to gather outside of the typical athletic event setting to celebrate our successes as well as focus our efforts to promote lung health.
While many of our Galas remain traditional black-tie events, we also provide the opportunity to participate in celebrations that reflect the current and exciting interests of our communities.
