Central States and MidSouth Regions of the American Lung Association Merge

The American Lung Association of the Central States and the American Lung Association of the MidSouth are pleased to announce the amalgamation of the two regions into one contiguous charter covering nine states—Alabama, Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas. Effective today, the newly consolidated region will be known as the American Lung Association of the Plains-Gulf Region.

“We deeply believe that this merger will result in a stronger regional association and increasing opportunities to further our mission,” said Sara Dreiling, CEO, American Lung Association of the Plains-Gulf Region.

Merger discussions began in August 2009. The merger was approved by the American Lung Association Board of Directors on June 11, 2010, and was finalized at the June 19, 2010, Joint-Board Meeting of the Central States and MidSouth regions in Dallas, Texas. The merged organization has assembled a Board of Directors consisting of representatives from each of the former Boards and has been working cohesively for months to shape the strategic planning and goals of the new entity.

“The expanded possibilities this merger brings to our new region are extremely exciting,” said Brian Lewis, Chair, Plains-Gulf Region Board of Directors. “This joining has already presented many advantages in the work we are doing to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease.”
